EECA Chimney Replacement Program

A large number of households have been affected by the devastating September and February earthquakes and the subsequent aftershocks but one positive to come out of these events is the EQC / EECA Chimney replacement program where households with damaged chimneys may be entitled to a fully funded clean heat appliance such as an Energy Star heat pump as an alternative to rebuilding the affected chimney.

Heat Pumps cost less to run for the equaivalent heat output than any other heating appliance available under the chimney replacement program so it makes sense to choose an appliance that will cost you as little as possible to run during the winter months.

Heat Pumps also have the added function of working in cooling mode as air conditioners on those hot Canterbury Nor-West summer days.

Many Heat Pumps now also have comprehensive timers so that you can program your heating around your lifestyle.

There is no chopping of wood, cleaning out ash, or changing a gas cylinder with a heat pump. The heat is nearly instant and can be controlled from the comfort of your couch.

To qualifiy for the program the affected chimney needs to have been for an open fire that was still in working condtion at the time of the earthquake, or the chimney was used for an older non-compliant solid fuel wood burner.
